  • ERC conducts both breeding and non-breeding surveys for migratory shorebirds and seabirds in compliance with Florida Department of Environmental Protection permit conditions, as well as procedures outlined in U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biological opinions and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers permits. Breeding bird surveys are performed during active construction projects that coincide with the breeding season, with a focus on beach-nesting species such as the American oystercatcher, least tern, black skimmer, snowy plover, and Wilson’s plover. During migratory and wintering bird surveys, the date, number, location, and activity of all shorebirds observed are documented. If banded piping plovers are encountered, detailed notes on band color and arrangement are recorded to identify the bird’s nesting population. ERC staff have extensive experience in shorebird monitoring programs across Florida and are active participants in the Panhandle Shorebird Working Group and Northwest Florida Shorebird Partnerships within the Florida Shorebird Alliance.
